Ministry of Education and Youth
The Ministry of Education and Youth oversees schooling and youth development programs on Mohéli. Education is a top priority for the government, as it lays the foundation for the island’s future. The ministry manages all public schools – including primary schools in each village, several secondary schools (with at least one major high school in Fomboni and others in outlying towns), and vocational training centers. It ensures that the national curriculum (which includes instruction in French, Arabic, and Comorian)

Is delivered effectively, and it works on improving education quality by training teachers and providing updated textbooks and materials. School enrollment rates in Mohéli have been on a steady rise, with the goal of achieving universal primary education. In recent years, the ministry has expanded early childhood education by opening more preschools, and has also partnered with the Union government to establish a branch of the University of Comoros on Mohéli (a satellite campus or learning center) so that students can pursue tertiary education without leaving the island for all coursework. For youth, the ministry goes beyond formal education. It runs Youth Empowerment programs that include extracurricular activities, sports, and civic engagement. The Department of Youth Affairs under this ministry might organize sports tournaments (football, basketball, athletics) and support local youth clubs in arts, music, and entrepreneurship.
Mohéli’s youth are encouraged to engage in community service and leadership training – for example, the ministry sponsors an annual Youth Leadership Summit where young people can voice their ideas for Mohéli’s development. Additionally, acknowledging the challenge of youth unemployment, the ministry coordinates with the Ministry of Agriculture and others to promote vocational skills in trades like carpentry, fishing, IT, and tourism through vocational schools or apprenticeships. There are also literacy programs for adults and out-of-school youth to ensure everyone has basic reading and writing skills. The Scholarship Office in this ministry assists outstanding Mohélian students in obtaining scholarships for higher education abroad or at national institutions. By investing in both education and youth engagement, the Ministry of Education and Youth aims to nurture an educated, skilled, and dynamic generation. The long-term vision is that these empowered youths will drive Mohéli’s social and economic progress while preserving the island’s cultural values.
