Ministry of Internal Security
The Ministry of Internal Security is responsible for maintaining public safety, law and order on Mohéli. This ministry oversees the local police forces, civil defense units, and disaster management services. Officers under Internal Security work to protect citizens, enforce laws (in cooperation with the national gendarmerie and Union police units present on the island), and respond to emergencies.

Key divisions include the Mohéli Police Commissioner’s Office, which handles community policing and crime prevention programs, and an Emergency Management Unit for natural disasters or accidents. Mohéli is generally peaceful, but the ministry remains vigilant against issues like petty crime, smuggling, or any threats to stability. It also runs public awareness campaigns on safety – for example, road safety for drivers (given Mohéli’s developing road network) and community workshops on conflict resolution. In terms of disaster preparedness, the Ministry of Internal Security coordinates with the Red Crescent and other relief organizations;
Mohéli, like other islands, can be prone to cyclones or heavy rains, so having evacuation plans and emergency shelters falls under this ministry’s purview. Additionally, the Internal Security Ministry manages the prison and rehabilitation services on the island, ensuring humane treatment and opportunities for rehabilitation for offenders.
