Ministry of Social Development and Gender
The Ministry of Social Development and Gender focuses on fostering an inclusive society where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive. Its mission covers social welfare programs, community development initiatives, and the promotion of gender equality across Mohéli. On the social development side, this ministry implements community-based projects such as poverty alleviation schemes, support for women’s cooperatives, and capacity-building for local NGOs. It often works closely with international development partners to run programs that improve livelihoods – for example, microfinance projects for women entrepreneurs or training in crafts and small business management for rural communities

The ministry might have Community Centers or outreach teams that engage with different villages to understand their needs, whether it’s improving water access, building a community hall, or launching adult education workshops. Regarding Gender, the ministry leads efforts to promote women’s rights and empowerment on Mohéli. It champions initiatives to increase the participation of women in leadership roles and the economy. For instance, it runs awareness campaigns against gender-based violence and ensures legal protections for women (in coordination with the justice system) are enforced. The ministry may also oversee programs like Women’s Health and Maternal Care (in collaboration with Health Ministry) and literacy programs targeting women who missed formal education. A notable program under this ministry is the Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund, which provides small grants or low-interest loans to businesswomen in Mohéli, encouraging them to start or expand businesses in agriculture, textiles, retail, etc. Additionally, the ministry hosts events on International Women’s Day and Day of the Girl Child, celebrating achievements and discussing ongoing challenges. Through its Gender Affairs department, it ensures that all government policies are viewed through a gender-sensitive lens – essentially acting as a watchdog that women’s considerations are integrated (gender mainstreaming) in areas like budgeting, land reforms, and education policy.
The Ministry of Social Development and Gender also pays special attention to child welfare and family services, ensuring that vulnerable children and single-parent families receive support and that social norms evolve towards greater equity and protection for all. By addressing social inequities and championing gender equality, this ministry contributes to building a cohesive, fair, and just society in Mohéli, where development truly leaves no one behind.
