National Heroes
Mohéli and the Union of Comoros honor the legacy of those who have contributed to the nation’s freedom, unity, and development. While there is currently no official National Heroes registry, the island pays tribute to historical figures and modern patriots alike. One figure of historical significance is Queen Djoumbé Fatima (Jumbe-Souli), who ruled Mohéli in the mid-19th century and is remembered for her leadership during a pivotal era . The heroes of Comorian independence (achieved on July 6, 1975) are also revered – including the fathers of the nation and all who struggled for self-determination. Mohéli’s own community leaders who have championed education, healthcare, and social progress are celebrated at local events and commemorations. The spirit of heroism here is not limited to famous names: teachers, doctors, farmers, and elders who have uplifted society are considered heroes in the hearts of Mohéli’s people. By remembering our heroes, we inspire the next generation to contribute with courage and patriotism.
